My work is inspired by, and structured from the natural world. I come to my art with a strong background in science and a degree in painting, both from the University of Washington. Working in the field of medical research I obtained skills in observation, problem solving, and in posing questions. These skills are complimented by an equally strong academic art background that I obtained through the instructors who influenced me, Robert Jones, Michael Spafford, Jacob Lawance, and Spencer Mosley
But my living on a large area of forested land in the Methow Valley, in Washington state has focused my attention on the natural world. Over the years I have become an amateur naturalist. I keep a Natural History Journal, much in the way naturalists did a century ago. I keep daily records of bird migration, nest sites, tree health, plant diversity, and more. Thus my art and science has become focused on this subject. I try to distill my scientific observations and interest in conservation into my paintings to produce work that the viewer will want to move into, wander around for awhile and come away feeling that something has been added to their world that stimulates them intellectually as well as visually and makes them think that perhaps the natural world is worth a second look.
I have had solo shows in Seattle, Pasco, Moses Lake, and in Twisp and have shown in numerous group shows throughout the northwest. My work is in collections locally and globally.
